I don’t know about y’all but when I was in first grade, some of us cool 6 year-olds would race each other. It was a very simple procedure. Someone says go and we each run from one end of the playground to the other. Their were certain people though you didn’t dare race so you wouldn’t lose dignity, not that we had much of it because after the race we’d typically play in the mud.
That’s a long way of saying that Kellyn Johnson is someone that’s difficult to beat in a race. It’s a big weekend of sports for WSU, but before we get into basketball team in Orlando and the volleyball team at the MVC tournament, we need to give some kudos to Johnson.
The senior finished her cross country career by competing in the NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday in Terre Haute, Ind. In her first appearance in this event, she took 59th place with a time of 20 minutes and 53.9 seconds in the 6K race.
Johnson has a slew of awards and top finishes, including finishing second at the MVC championships. WSU has not had anyone compete at the NCAA meet since 2005 so making it that far was a good accomplishment, especially consider how close Johnson got last year. She missed qualifying by one spot.
The Wisconsin native has done pretty well in Kansas first at Cloud County Community College and now at WSU. She already is the No. 2 all-time runner in three different WSU track events and won the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters at the conference track meet last year.
It will be interesting this spring to see if Johnson can set some all-time WSU records and where she stacks up nationally in terms of long-distance runners.
